Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Breathe different?

Our private online sessions have been designed with a sliding scale pricing structure. There are three different costs aimed at people with different levels of financial resources. In short, people on low-income pay less and financially-resourced people pay more. By paying what you can this allows us to keep this structure in place for those who are struggling financially.

Paying what you can allows us to teach mindful sessions for free to those who are in financial distress and unable to meet their basic needs.

Why does this matter?

We believe our prices are reasonable, but we recognise that this means something different to different people. This form of mutual helps to remove barriers and has gone a long way to met common needs. By offering our one-to-one service on a sliding scale, we are extending mutual aid and people power. In short, this is another way forward to work together for positive change and to spread the benefits of mindfulness meditation.

What is Mindfulness meditation?

Mindfulness meditation is a practice were we use a set of techniques to train attention and awareness to achieve mental clarity and emotional clam. Mindfulness is a way of training our attention to what is going on inside and outside ourselves, moment by moment, with an attitude of gentleness and acceptance.

Do I need previous experience?

No all classes are beginner friendly, but more experienced practitioners are welcome.

What do I bring to class?

I would recommend wearing comfortable clothing and something warm as the body temperate is likely to drop. We practice with shoes on or off, so thick socks are optional. You may like to bring some water or a hot drink on colder days. If you prefer to sit on the ground you are free to bring a small cushion, however chairs will be provided.

What are the benefits to practising mindfulness?

Potential benefits include being more present and improving our quality of life while discovering the joy within normal routines. Developing confidence, greater patience, inner stability and awareness. To date, thousands of research papers have been published which show significant increases in memory processing, emotion regulation and perspective-taking. However, research is only in its infancy and we practice mindfulness to experience the richness of the human experience within the present moment and not to strive towards any mensurable outcomes.

I have experienced trauma, will your class be suitable for me?

My teaching style is based upon trauma sensitive principles. Therefore, sessions are focused on staying within the present moment without ‘fixing’, developing resilience, there is no physical adjustments and I offer choices within the practices. Please note that sessions are not aimed at treating trauma. Participants may be triggered and we must have an element of self-care while practicing. If you feel triggered I would recommend seeking advice and support from a trained healthcare professional.

Is Mindfulness a treatment for mental health problmes?

Mindfulness is proven to be beneficial for mental health and wellbeing in the right circumstances, but mindfulness practice session(s) are not ‘treatment’ for mental health problems or any addictions. If you are experiencing any mental health or medical problems, or have recently received or are currently receiving treatment for an ongoing mental health problem or addiction, we would strongly advise that you obtain advice from a qualified professional before processing further with our service at this time. The services we offer are for educational purposes only.

I'm not religious, can I still practice mindfulness?

Yes you can practice mindfulness regardless of your beliefs or background. Mindfulness has its roots in Buddhism, but the meditation practices taught are completely secular. All that is required is to have an open mind and a sense of curiosity about the world around you.
